Areas Where People Live Longest and Reasons for Longevity

Every now and again we see reports ranking different areas across the world in terms of life expectancy. This goes to show this is not the same everywhere. With the advancement in medicine over the years, you might be tempted to think the United States should be where one would find places with most people living well into old age. This is not really so. We discuss top places with high concentration of people that live the longest in this piece. You may ask whether this makes any difference. Well, we think it does. We can learn why they live to 100 years or over and try to imitate what they do as well.

Longevity areas

There are five geographical areas around the globe that are renowned for having people that live the longest. They are referred as the Blue Zones. That description came into the limelight after National Geographic Society researcher Dan Buettner used it for five locations that had people living the longest. Before then, demographers Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain had also used "Blue Zone" to describe areas around Nuoro province in Sardinia said to have the highest number of male centenarians.

The five geographic areas that were statistically shown by Buettner as having longest living persons are:

  • Okinawa, Japan
  • Sardinia, Italy
  • Loma Linda, California, US
  • Ikaria, Greece
  • Nicoya, Costa Rica

Okinawa – Located around 360 miles off Japan's coast, the islands of Okinawa boast the world's highest population percentage of centenarians. The area is said to be home to almost 750 such people, compared to overall population of about 1.3 million. The people not only live long, but also enjoy great health well into old age.

Sardinia – This is an island positioned off the coast of Italy. Sardinia is said to have the highest number of male centenarians anywhere in the world. These are particularly concentrated in Barbagia of Seulo, Ogliastra and Barbagia di Ollolai. The village of Seulo held the record of having 20 centenarians from 1996 to 2016.

Loma Linda – This community of Seventh-Day Adventists in California have a high number of people living longer than the average American. The life expectancy in Loma Linda is about 10 years longer than that of the entire US.

Ikaria – The island people appear to always live longer because this is another island. Perhaps, we all need to start living in such places then. This Greek island, which is located off Turkey's coast, has many people living to at least 90 years. Researchers found that almost 1 in every 3 persons in Ikaria live to 90 years of age. Medical diseases that kill many people in Western countries are also less common. For example, the rate of cardiovascular disease is 50 percent lower among the inhabitants of Ikaria.

Nicoya – This Costa Rican peninsula lies in a remote location in the Central American country. This may, in fact, be a reason why significant number of people here live longer. The people in Nicoya are estimated to be two times likely to live to 90 than Americans. The cancer rates there is said to be the lowest in Costa Rica as well.

There are some other places around the world where people are said to live exceptionally[SYN]long. But researchers observed that there is often considerable uncertainty over the real age of individuals in such places.

In terms of country, the following have the highest concentration of people that live the longest:

  • Monaco
  • Japan
  • Singapore
  • Macau
  • San Marino

Lessons from the longevity regions

So what are the secrets of people living in the Blue Zones? How do they manage to live so long? The following are some important lessons we can draw from these areas:

Healthy diet - First, a lesson from the areas with the longest living people is about watching what we eat. The people in these regions eat the kinds of foods that many are still being advised to adopt in the U.S. They eat as natural as possible. Majority of what they consume comes from their own gardens or farms. They mostly maintain a semi-vegetarian diet, except for Sardinia. The people eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Their diet also features legumes, nuts, olive oil, potatoes, goat's milk, corn and herbal teas rich in antioxidants.

Decent Lifestyle – Another great thing about people living in these areas is that they maintain a healthy lifestyle. This often results more from personal choices, maybe based on belief, than health considerations. Take the case of members of the Seventh-Day Adventist in Loma Linda for example. Their religious belief keeps them from smoking or drinking alcohol. In areas where people do smoke or consume alcohol, the rate is usually way lower than what obtains in most modern societies. Another common current among these zones is that people tend to spend quality time together.

Staying active – While people living in these areas may not always do the sorts of exercise we know, they make up for this by trying to stay active all the time. The people are almost always moving or doing something. Buettner said they are nudged into some physical activity like every 20 minutes. Compare that to many people in the West who spend a significant amount of time sitting in the same place. Virtually all the tasks of people in the Blue Zones that could be handled with a machine are done manually. Weeding, cleaning and food preparation all involve manual work. Also, the people walk a lot. All this essentially means they burn a lot of calories each day without having a special diet or fitness regimen.

Spirituality – This is a key factor in the Seventh-Day Adventist community of Loma Linda. The faith these people profess in God seems to keep them going. This dependence on the Creator keeps them from worrying too much about happenings of life. It can be said that this is a great way of dealing with stress that do cause health issues. Spirituality is also a key factor among the inhabitants of Nicoya peninsula.

In addition to the above characteristics, the following are some of the others these people mostly share:

  • Keeping a positive attitude
  • Getting adequate sleep, including afternoon naps
  • High value for family
  • Having a sense of purpose in life
  • Spending quality time outdoors
  • Nurturing a sense of humor about life

You may agree that these do indeed look like great lessons for how to live a healthy, long life. The things these people do are practically what experts usually advise those interested in living healthy or slow aging. For example, if you observe closely, you will notice that the diet of the people seems to lack refined sugars. The threats these sugars pose to the health of individuals are well documented.

We cannot ignore the fact that the longevity of people in the mentioned places may have a lot to do with genetics. But then, that is only a factor. You will most likely enhance your chances of living long by also trying to do what these people do.
