Can Stem Cells Help You Grow Taller

There are many benefits that come with being a tall person. This explains why many people, including adults, are interested in adding to their height. For children and adolescence, it is easier to achieve this goal of becoming taller. But it can be quite painful or outright impossible for you to add some inches to your height after puberty. Stems cells have been suggested by some for promotion of height. Do these really help? Read on to learn about what is known about this topic for now.

Stem Cells medical uses

How are stem cells related to height?

A stem cell is described as an undifferentiated cell capable of producing many more specialized cells. This means stem cells can be of use in virtually all parts of the body. These play crucial roles in promoting health and wellness. They help to form blood vessels as well as repair them.

Of course, you also have these cells in your bones. The suggestion appears to be that they play more important role in the determination of how tall you can become than growth plates. Some experts say chondrocyte hypertrophy, or enlargement, is the most important factor in height.

Stem cells differentiate into chondrocytes, cells that secrete and maintain the matrix of cartilage. This is driven by type II collagen and hydrostatic pressure. You can find type II collagen in all bones of the body. Following puberty, hydrostatic pressure can be built by compressing the bones either laterally or vertically. Bone volume increases when hypertrophy occurs. Larger cells lead to greater height.

Another reason stem cells are considered helpful for promoting height has to do with their relationship with osteoblasts. The latter cells aid to synthesize or form bones in the body. You may grow taller from the differentiation of stem cells into the bone forming osteoblasts.

The supposed actions of these cells seem to suggest that becoming taller is not about the state of your growth plates. It is about regulating stem cell differentiation into bone related cells. However, there is no consensus on whether they can actually help you grow taller. This is with particular reference to adults. The mechanisms that determine whether these cells differentiate into chondrocytes or osteoblasts are not known.

Stem cells are regarded the future of medicine. They are being investigated, or already being used, for a variety of medical conditions. The quality that makes them to stand out is that they can differentiate into any cell. They can become cells of any part of the body where they are present or inserted.

Research on stem cells for height

Different clinical trials are being carried out to better understand the benefits stem cells can offer. However, it is hard to come by any study that specifically focuses on their use for promoting height. There appears to be significant skepticism on use for this purpose.

Researchers have instead focused on other health uses, including treatment of cancer and organ related issues. Trials are also being done on how stem cells can be beneficial for treating macular degeneration and other eye issues. There is work on using them to promote healing of spinal damage. Numerous other studies have been, or are being, conducted as well on other uses.

From the look of things, it appears height promotion, especially in adults, doesn't sound like a great idea to the regulators. Oversight role of the FDA has, no doubt, contributed to slow interest in using stem cells to increase height in the U.S. It must be said that these regulations are meant to protect the health of people and prevent wastage of their hard-earned financial resources on treatments that do not work.

Breakthrough in this aspect appears more likely to come from countries with less strict regulations on use of stem cells. China is a good example of such places.

Any hope of using stem cells for height?

There is research confirming the earlier explanation of how stem cells impact on bones. Studies have shown that they can indeed promote bone growth. They can also help in speeding healing of injured bones. The issue here is that almost all of these trials were not done with specific reference to increasing height.

However, an expert in Russia is said to have pre-clinical evidence indicating stem cells can indeed help people grow taller. Plastic surgeon Alexander Teplyashin is reported to have increased the length of the legs of some sheep by implanting them with stem cells. This finding was made in preclinical trials, a prerequisite for clinical trials in that country. But the research couldn’t continue as government failed to grant permission due to reservation about the use of stem cells.

Some researchers from Scotland have further confirmed that stem cells can indeed help to promote bone growth. The scientists from the University of Glasgow and University of West Scotland used a technique called nanokicking to induce the result. This method mimics the natural conditions of bones in the body. The use of 1000Hz frequency of electricity caused the cells to become bone in roughly four weeks. However, the researchers did not talk about this helping to increase height.

Years ago, there was a claim by a clinic in China that it could increase height by up to 12 inches, or even more, using stem cells. This was said to involve using a machine made in South Korea to implant the cells into bone to promote height. However, that assertion appears too good to be true. Nothing has been heard on whether anyone recorded success with that.

But in all of this, there looks to be hope that may be used for height increase in the future. The prospect is anchored on expected advances in biotechnology. Chinese stem cell clinics may be the first to make treatments available, based on observations at this time.

Increasing height with exercises

Exercises constitute one of the more believable means of growing taller. Of course, you have other options. But these other ones, in most cases, are either too costly or risky (or painful) for many people to go for them. This makes exercise to sound as an appealing way to boost height.

Workouts, in general, may help you grow taller due to effects on the production of human growth hormone. It boosts the release of this substance, which, as the name suggests, promote growth. There are also specific exercises that are said to be better for promoting height. We discuss a number of these below.

Pelvic shift

This helps to stretch your body, including the spine, and so is believed beneficial in increasing height. It improves flexibility. Pelvic shift is quite easy to do. You start lying on your back, with your arms and shoulders tightly on the floor. Slowly bend your knees to bring your feet as near as possible to your buttocks. Then raise your pelvis upward, with your back forming an arch. Maintain the position for up to 30 seconds. You may repeat this as many times as you can.

Bar hanging

The usefulness of this routine is based on the idea that gravity is a major factor in people being short. It compresses your spine and joints, leveling the cartilage. Bar hanging is meant to address this concern. You do it by hanging, with your hands, on a horizontal bar ideally placed at a level that keeps your feet off the floor. Relax your shoulders, arms and hips for this to be more effective in stretching your body. Hang for 20 seconds, release your hands, and repeat for three or more times.

Ankle weights

Done with weights attached to the ankles, this exercise offers a possibly helpful means of increasing height in lower part of your body. There is extension of the cartilage in your knees when you lift your legs up. This is thought to be capable of increasing mass and making cartilage longer. This, in turn, may be beneficial in increasing height.

You could combine this with bar hanging, if you are daring enough. You attach the ankle weights and hang on a horizontal bar at the same time. Some advise kicking your legs gently and strongly – 5 to 10 times for each – after taking off the weights. This improves flexibility of knee cartilage and enhances lengthening.

Pilates roll over

This exercise offers a great way of stretching your spine to help you look a little taller. It is also useful for extending the length of the vertebrae in your neck. Pilates rollover starts with your back on the floor and arms by your side with your palms facing down. Place your legs together and then raise them up towards the ceiling. Bend the legs backward to touch the floor around your head.

There are numerous other exercises that are said to help promote height. But it has to be stated that the efficacy of these are largely unproven.

Growth hormone for height

We indicated previously that exercises help to promote height via the effect it has on growth hormone production. HGH facilitates cell repair and regeneration. It is believed to facilitate bone growth which can make a person become taller.

Children and adolescents have the greatest level of growth hormone. This explains why much of your height is determined when you are much younger. After puberty, you are less likely to grow taller from HGH. The amounts of the substance in the body are known to reduce as people become older. Those who desire to become taller may, therefore, get some help by boosting their levels.

HGH injections offer the most potent way of raising the amount of growth hormone in the body. They contain somatropin, which is described as the exact replica of the natural version. It should be noted, though, that these injections are not intended for uses such as height increase. They are approved for just a handful of medical conditions tied to HGH deficiency.

You will have to make do with HGH supplements that promote natural production of the hormone. Of these, Growth Factor Plus will be more fitting. This supplement is made specifically for people looking to increase height through growth hormone. It offers a blend of ingredients tailored to make you taller by elongating cartilage discs between the 24 movable vertebrae of the spinal column. Its manufacturer says the product is beneficial for adults whose growth plates have closed as well.

Stem cells offer impressive potential for increasing height. However, there appears to be no practice in the U.S., or any other developed country, where they are being used for this purpose. China boasts stem cell clinics that are more likely to offer such treatments sometime in the future. Until then, you may want to consider doing exercises that are believed capable of increasing height. You can combine these with the use of Growth Factor Plus to improve your chances of achieving noticeable results.
