What Relationship Exists Between Diabetes and Growth Hormone?

It is without doubt that diabetes is a major health concern in the world today. It is actually among the more unsettling ones, considering there is no known cure for it as yet. The most you can do once you have it is to manage its symptoms. Human growth hormone is one of many things that have been associated to the condition. Does this substance worsen or improve it? Read on to learn more.

Diabetes and HGH

Diabetes is a condition that results from the inability of your body to use sugar effectively. Normally, the foods you eat, more specifically carbohydrates, gets broken down into glucose in the body. The broken down sugars are then carried to different parts of the body where they are needed.

You need to have adequate amount of the hormone insulin for this process to run well. This is what moves glucose from your blood into cells. Type 1 diabetes results when the pancreas doesn't produce sufficient quantity of this hormone. In the case of Type 2, there may be high amount of insulin, but body cells are insensitive to it. Blood sugar levels in either cases surge, bringing about symptoms of diabetes.

Also known as the master hormone, HGH is a vital, naturally occurring substance in the body. It plays a role in many important processes. It is crucial for growth and development in childhood. The peptide also promotes good health in people of all ages.

But like some other hormones, levels of growth hormone drop as people get older. These brings about certain unpleasant changes, including signs of aging and a variety of medical conditions. Some people argue that this decline contributes to occurrence of diabetes as well. This suggests that supplementation may help in managing the metabolic disorder.

How Growth Hormone May Help

HGH is not one of the regular treatment options that you may hear mentioned for diabetes. However, certain actions attributed to it may be helpful for managing this disorder.

Improves glucose metabolism

It is believed that growth hormone can help to regulate the amount of sugar in your bloodstream. Another substance known as insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) mediates the action of HGH. As its name seems to suggest, the hormone somewhat mimics the action of insulin. This improves the absorption of glucose from the blood. IGF-1 helps to ensure this gets into cells and tissues where the sugars are needed for respiration, energy and growth.

Reduces body fat and cholesterol levels

Overweight and obesity contribute greatly to occurrence of diabetes. They cause some harmful chemicals capable of disrupting effective glucose metabolism to be released. As a result, glucose is not able to find its way out of your blood.

High cholesterol levels in the blood raises the risk of you having diabetes. This is because cholesterol deprives body cells of glucose. It absorbs sugar, thereby increasing the levels in the blood. It is said that growth hormone can help to keep the amount of cholesterol well under control.

Enhances insulin sensitivity

As a result of the foregoing, some claim that growth hormone may help your pancreas to produce more insulin. The fact that IGF-1 is also removing glucose from the blood stream means the gland and liver do not need to work over time. This may protect them from losing their function.

Improved glucose metabolism also means that insulin sensitivity may improve. It becomes less difficult to move sugar from the blood, since there is now lower amount to deal with. Reduced fat and cholesterol also improve insulin sensitivity.

What Research Shows

Some studies suggest that growth hormone may indeed help to manage diabetes. However, in some cases, these do not indicate this directly. This means they might, for instance, find that the substance improves glucose metabolism or reduces body fat.

In research at John Hopkins Institute, it was found that growth hormone therapy helps to deal with visceral fat and improve insulin sensitivity. The researchers suggested that proper usage of the substance can be useful in controlling symptoms of metabolic disorder.

Somewhat by accident, some researchers in Belgium observed that growth hormone may facilitate insulin production. After injecting an HGH gene into mice, it was found that the animals started to produce own growth hormone as they usually do when pregnant. This, in turn, led to increase in the number of cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Levels of the diabetes controlling hormone rose as a result.

Another group of researchers from the same European country noted that growth hormone deficiency increased risk of type 2 diabetes. They made use data of more than 6,000 adults from the Pfizer International Metabolic Database for their research that was published in the European Journal of Endocrinology in 2012. The researchers hypothesized that obesity and visceral fat raise risk of having the disorder. The found that occurrence of diabetes was higher among GH deficient individuals, compared to peers that shared similar characteristics but who were not deficient.

Precautions

It is pertinent to state that it is not all a case of positives when it comes to the relationship between diabetes and human growth hormone. In some cases, the use of the substance was what resulted in the metabolic disorder. This is thought capable of causing insulin resistance. How?

Those who make this argument said HGH causes a high amount of free fatty acids to be released into the blood. These impede efficient transport of glucose into cells. By the way, an inverse relationship has also been observed between growth hormone and insulin levels. When one rises, the other falls.

To deal with this, the body steps up production of insulin. This continues up to a point when cells become insensitive to the hormone. Insulin resistance is synonymous with type 2 diabetes.

This outcome is something that some professional bodybuilders and athletes already know about, probably from the experiences of others. This is the reason they do take insulin injections to control high blood sugar levels that may result from the use of HGH. This other hormone also helps to keep muscles from breaking down.

Arguments on both the positive and negative effects of growth hormone on diabetes looks rather confusing, you might say. But it appears the difference is in how often and how long you use the peptide. It is believed to be safe for managing the condition when taken in low amounts. This should also not go on for a long time uninterrupted.

It may be advisable for anyone interested in boosting growth hormone levels to go for HGH releasers like HGF Max and Somatropinne. These do not include real hormone, but only stimulate natural production. This means they are less likely to result in elevated levels, compared to when HGH injections are used. Guidance of a health professional will be helpful before taking any decision on supplementation.
